To determine the amount of Total Solids, Suspended Solids & Dissolved Solids of given sample of water

Apparatus Required: Table, filter paper, measuring cylinder, heater, porcelain dish, funnel, oven, weighing machine, beaker etc.

Theory: Total Solid is the summation of dissolved solid & suspended solid.

Procedure:

1.     Take the weight of porcelain dish (M1).
2.     Fill 50 ml water sample in it.
3.     Place dish on stream bath & evaporate it till dryness.
4.     Cool it & weigh it with residue (M2)
5.     Take 50 ml water sample again.
6.     Take filter paper & weigh it (M3)
7.     Filter water through filter paper.
8.     Keep filter paper with residue in oven & evaporate till dryness.
9.     Weigh filter paper with residue (M4)
Observation:

Volume of water sample in each test: 50ml
Mass of empty dish: M1
Mass of dish + dry residue: M2
Mass Of Filter Paper: M3
Mass of filter paper + dry residue:  M4

Computations:

Suspended Solids in 50 ml sample: (M 4+ M3) gm
Concentration Of Suspended Solids:
 [(M4-M1)x50]x1000 ppm  = x ppm
Total solids in 50 ml sample: (M2 –M1 ) gm
Concentration Of Total Solids:
  [(M2-M1)x50]x1000 ppm  = y ppm
Concentration Of Dissolved Solids: (y-x) ppm
