Determination Of Electrical Conductivity Of Water Using Conductivity Meter
Apparatus Required: Conductivity Meter, Conductivity Cell, Beaker
Theory: The conductivity of water is a property by virtue of which the current is passed through it.It is measured in Micromho/cm or Millimhos/cm or Millisimmen/m
Procedure:
- Switch on the instrument.
- Connect the connectivity cell to instrument.
- Put instrument in calibration mode and adjust value that is equal to the value of cell constant.
- Check accuracy of instrument by checking the conductivity of standard solution of known concentration.
- Prepare it by dissolving 0.5232 gm potassium chloride in 1 l deionized water. The conductivity of this solution is 1 millimhos/cm or 1000 microsimens/cm.
- Measure the conductivity of KCL solution and check whether it is 1 millimhos/cm or not.
- If it's right then check the electrical conductivity of the water sample.
- Take sample in beaker & dip the cell in it.
- Keep the instrument in mhos.
- To get better accuracy put the instrument according.
- Note down the value of display.
- Above noted value is the measured conductivity of the water sample.
Result:
Correct Value= Measured Value x Cell Constant
T.D.S of above sample= (0.55 to 0.9) x Electric Conductivity mg/l
